Understanding the user

User research: summary

I asked a few people why they like to dine in at their favorite restaurant(s).  A lot of them answered that the ability to customize menu items adds value to their dining experience. We want that dining experience translated to our ordering app to continue to deliver the same value as their dine-in experience.

Other Means of Access

4

Time

Some users find it fussy to order via phone, and would rather just order through an app.

Users who have certain food allergies still want to enjoy food that may have triggering food allergens.

Users who lead busy lives find it challenging to prepare meals on hectic workdays.

Child-friendly food

Users find it annoying when they can’t remove ingredients they don’t like in a food item or modify the taste of certain food.

Markus

Markus is a retired musician

who needs to have certain ingredients in his food order because his wife has food allergies.

Anna

Anna is a working mom of two with a busy schedule

who needs to customize her food orders

because she is mindful of what she and her kids eat.

User journey map

Users more than likely have to spend time to indicate specific needs when ordering food. Markus, for example, find it time-consuming to mention allergens and changing ingredients for their dinner.

Digital versions of the initial screens

High-Fidelity Wireframe & Prototype

The previous version had the location change below the top navigation bar. We removed the bar, and integrated the branch selector in the order process.

I've added an extra feature to add payment methods and addresses in profile.

High fidelity prototype can be tested here.

Takeaways

What I learned

I learned that research and testing is an iterative and long process. There is no shortcut to it, and that every good product has gone through these phases numerous times.

Impact

The latest changes made the user workflow more streamlined, directing the user to select a location to order from first before going to the order process and the ingredient customization. The added payment and delivery addresses are nice to haves, but we have incorporated them in the latest build.
